The Indo-Pacific Futures Fellowship (IPFF), organized by the East-West Center in partnership with the Doris Duke Foundation, seeks to nurture such leadership by equipping professionals with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to drive sustainable change in the region.

During the second year, the fellowship will focus  on the complex relationship between food security, energy systems, and effective leadership. Through immersive experiences, collaborative discussions, and expert-led sessions, fellows will explore strategies to enhance economic growth, ensure resource availability, and promote long-term sustainability.

Program Overview

The Indo-Pacific Futures Fellowship is a highly competitive and dynamic leadership program designed for mid-career professionals across diverse sectors. The program will take place over eight months, from October 2025 to May 2026, with a combination of in-person and virtual sessions. 

Participants will gain firsthand experience through on-site engagement in Hawai‘i and Aotearoa (New Zealand), supplemented by regular online meetings. The program aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving, bringing together experts, policymakers, business leaders, community advocates, and social entrepreneurs.

Key Themes:

  • Food Security: Ensuring reliable access to nutritious food through sustainable agricultural practices, equitable distribution, and policy advocacy.
  • Energy Systems: Exploring transitions to renewable energy, innovations in energy storage and distribution, and strategies for balancing energy demand with environmental considerations.
  • Leadership for Sustainability: Strengthening leadership capacities to implement impactful solutions that address regional and global sustainability challenges.

Program Structure and Timeline

The IPFF is structured to provide an intensive and immersive learning experience. The program includes pre-residency virtual sessions, in-person engagements, and continuous virtual learning. Fellows will collaborate on capstone projects that translate their learning into actionable solutions for their communities.


Program Timeline:

  • Pre-Residency Virtual Sessions: October 13-26, 2025
  • Honolulu, Hawai‘i Residency: October 27-November 7, 2025
  • Virtual Sessions: November 8, 2025-May 24, 2026
  • Wellington, New Zealand Residency: May 25-31, 2026

The program’s hybrid format ensures flexibility while maintaining depth and engagement. The in-person components provide experiential learning opportunities, while virtual sessions allow ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing among fellows.

Eligibility Criteria

The Indo-Pacific Futures Fellowship is open to professionals with significant leadership experience in food security, energy systems, or related advocacy work. While there are no nationality restrictions, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5 to 10 years of professional experience in a leadership role within food and energy systems, advocacy, government, business, arts, or technology.
  • Demonstrated engagement with Indo-Pacific regional issues.
  • Fluent in English (evidence of proficiency through TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent is encouraged but not mandatory).
  • A valid passport with an expiration date beyond December 2026.
  • Commitment to full participation in all program activities, including travel and virtual engagements.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years of higher education studies is preferred but not required.
  • Passion for community-focused initiatives addressing global challenges.
  • Ability to work with diverse perspectives and adapt to new environments.
  • Strong communication skills for both written and verbal assignments.
  • Willingness to step outside their professional comfort zone and engage in a transformative learning experience.

Financial Support and Provisions

The Indo-Pacific Futures Fellowship is fully funded, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder participation. Fellows will receive comprehensive support covering:

  • Round-trip airfare to and from program locations.
  • Accommodation for in-person residencies.

  • Professional Resume/CV: Highlighting relevant leadership experience, education, and achievements.

  • Letter(s) of Reference: At least one, preferably two, letters from professional contacts who can attest to the applicant’s qualifications and leadership potential.
  • English Proficiency Evidence (if applicable): TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent scores.
